Breakfast Near Descanso Gardens — Where to Eat Before or After

Descanso Gardens is one of the best half-day visits in LA county — 150 acres of camellias, oaks, the Japanese garden, the rose garden, the spring tulip explosion. It's also one of the only major LA gardens with no real on-site food. The Camellia Cafe at the entrance does sandwiches, but it's a quick-service window, often closed off-season, and most visitors leave hungry.
The fix: drive five minutes north on the 2 to Honolulu Avenue.
Toasted, five minutes from Descanso
From Descanso's parking lot at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, take Verdugo Boulevard west, then turn right on Ocean View, then left on Honolulu Avenue. Five minutes, mostly residential streets, no freeway needed.
Toasted Cafe is on Honolulu in the Montrose Shopping Park. Free street parking out front, a 40-space city lot one block away, and a dog-friendly patio if you brought your dog along the gardens (Descanso allows leashed dogs on most paths).
What to order before vs after
Before the gardens: something portable + coffee. The Bananas for Biscoff breakfast toast ($11.75) holds up in your hand. The Avocado Toast ($15.95) is vegan, sturdy, doesn't need a knife. Add an Armenian coffee ($4) — small cup, big caffeine, won't fill you up before you're walking 2+ miles.
After the gardens: the celebration meal. A Toast Tower ($16.50–$28, dine-in only). The Saffron & Rose pairs beautifully with garden mood — vanilla-rosewater ice cream, pistachios, rose petals. Or the Tiramisu Tower with coffee ice cream and mascarpone if you want dessert that doubles as your second coffee.
Hours that match Descanso's
- Descanso opens 9 AM (10 AM December–February).
- Toasted opens 8 AM, seven days a week. We're reliably open before Descanso's gates.
- Descanso closes 5 PM (most of year). Toasted is open until 4 PM Mon–Thu and 8 PM Fri–Sun. Most visits, we're open after the garden closes too.
Make a half-day of it
The classic Foothill itinerary:
- 9 AM — Coffee + breakfast toast at Toasted (allow 30–45 min).
- 9:45 AM — Drive 5 min, enter Descanso when gates open.
- 9:45 AM – 12:30 PM — Walk Descanso. Camellia forest, oak woodland, Japanese garden, rose garden. Plan ~2.5 hours minimum.
- 12:45 PM — Lunch back at Toasted. By now you've earned a Toast Tower.

Practical notes
- Parking: Descanso lot is free. Honolulu Ave parking is free street + free city lot.
- Dogs: leashed on Descanso paths; welcome on the Toasted patio with water bowls.
- Wheelchair access: Descanso has accessible paths; Toasted has step-free entrance + ADA restroom.
- Cash + cards: Toasted takes both. Apple Pay works.
Descanso is a destination. The breakfast plan shouldn't be an afterthought — it's the bookend that makes the day feel finished. Five minutes north on the 2.
