Brunch in Montrose: A Local's Guide

There’s a particular kind of morning that Montrose does better than almost anywhere in the foothills: the slow one. The kind where you wander down Honolulu Ave with no real agenda, the shop awnings are still casting long shadows, and the only decision that matters is sweet or savory, coffee or a flight of it. If that sounds like your idea of a good Saturday, you’re looking for brunch — and you’ve come to the right village.
We’re toasted., a family-owned café right in the heart of the Montrose Shopping Park, and we’ve been serving all-day brunch and specialty coffee here since 2021. This is our love letter to brunch in Montrose: what to look for, how to think about it whether you’re rolling in from La Crescenta or Glendale, and — yes — what we’d order if we were sitting down at our own table.
What makes a great Montrose brunch
Brunch is more than breakfast served late. A great one has three things going for it. First, it’s unhurried — there’s a seat that’s yours for as long as you want it, and nobody’s rushing the check. Second, it gives you something you can’t easily make at home: a dish worth getting dressed for. And third, the coffee is taken as seriously as the food.
That last part matters more than people admit. Plenty of places do a fine plate of eggs. Far fewer pour coffee they’re genuinely proud of. We brew Stumptown’s “Hairbender” espresso, keep eleven house-made syrups on hand, and serve a $17 Coffee Flight so you can taste your way to a favorite. (We even brew traditional Armenian coffee for anyone who’d like to try it — more in our guide to where to find Armenian coffee in Los Angeles.)
Brunch in Montrose, La Crescenta & Glendale — finding your spot
The foothill communities — Montrose, La Crescenta, La Cañada, and Glendale just down the hill — are spoiled for breakfast. You’ve got decades-old diners, third-wave coffee bars, cozy indie spots, and everything in between. The honest advice? Match the place to your morning. Want a quick classic-diner plate? There are great ones nearby. Want brunch as an occasion — something a little special, a table worth lingering at, a dish your friends will ask about — that’s the lane we built toasted. for.
If you’re coming from La Crescenta
You’re about five minutes down Honolulu Ave. Brunch in La Crescenta and brunch in Montrose are practically the same trip — just keep heading toward the Shopping Park and you’ll find us at 2420 Honolulu Ave, between the boutiques. Easy on a weekend when you want to make a morning of it: brunch, a stroll, maybe a second coffee for the road.
If you’re coming from Glendale
From Glendale you’re a short drive up into the foothills, and it’s worth it for the change of pace — Montrose feels like a small town that happens to have excellent coffee. If you’ve been searching “brunch Glendale” and want something that feels a little more village-Saturday than city-busy, point the car toward Montrose. We’re open seven days a week, which means we’re often here when other spots are dark early in the week.
What to order for brunch at toasted.
Our menu runs more than 80 items deep — açaí bowls, waffles, egg plates, breakfast toasts, sandwiches, and salads — so you can absolutely build a quiet, classic brunch here. But if it’s your first time, let us steer.
Start with a Toast Tower
The Toast Tower is our signature, and it’s the dish people photograph before they take a bite. It arrives stacked tall and golden, built by hand, and made to share (though we won’t judge if you don’t). It’s the thing that put us on the map in Montrose, and it’s the easiest way to understand what we’re about. Browse the full lineup on our menu and come hungry.
Make it a Coffee Flight
Can’t decide on one coffee? Don’t. Our Coffee Flight is $17 — four little cups, one happy table — and it turns “I’ll have a latte” into a guided tasting. It’s part tasting, part excuse to linger, and it’s hands-down the most fun way to find your new usual. Pair it with a Toast Tower and you’ve basically had the full toasted. experience in one sitting.
The best-kept secret: weekend afternoons
Here’s the local move most people miss. Brunch doesn’t have to end at noon. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays we’re open until 7 PM — so the 3-o’clock “let’s stay a little longer” window is wide open. A lot of nearby breakfast spots close by mid-afternoon; we don’t. Come after a walk through the Montrose Shopping Park, claim a window seat, and order a Toast Tower with a Coffee Flight while the afternoon light does its thing. It’s the most underrated brunch slot in town, and it’s almost always got a seat for you.
