There's a specific little heartbreak in the foothills: it's 4:30 on a Saturday, the light is turning gold on Honolulu Avenue, you want a proper coffee and something sweet at a table — and door after door is already locked. Most cafés up here wind down by mid-afternoon. We get it; mornings are the café business. But somebody should be pouring espresso at golden hour.

Honestly? Dessert. The late slot is when the Dessert Toast Tower makes the most sense — thick-cut artisan bread stacked with ice cream, fruit, chocolate, and toppings, built to be shared and photographed before it's demolished. Petite $16.50, One Toast $20.75, the full Two Toast Tower $28. Dine-in only, eight flavors, and it lands differently at 5 PM than it does at breakfast.

Pair it with the Coffee Flight — $17, four Stumptown-pulled coffees side by side, and yes, there's an iced version for August. Not a coffee-at-5 person? The Roseade ($5.25) — our house rose-water lemonade — was made for warm evenings on the patio.

Our Honolulu Avenue patio faces the evening light, and it's dog-friendly — so the after-dinner-walk crowd is very welcome to make us the destination. Weekend evenings are the calm end of our day: no brunch line, easy tables, the Montrose Shopping Park doing its slow-Saturday thing around you.
